I'm hugely inspired by Henri Matisse- his paintings are often inspired by the many textiles that he had in his studio, and his collage work is bold, daring, colourful, and sculptural, all things that I look for when designing Namai. We've started making some jackets that aren't just made from one quilt, they are a kaleidoscope of many different quilts combined together, and they are very much inspired by his work. |
Georgia O'Keefe is another huge influence on me. I'm inspired by her incredible flower paintings of course, but also her uncompromising work ethic, her personal style and beautiful home and photographs. Somehow I love her flower paintings more because they come from her, a pioneering and groundbreaking artist that achieved success against all odds. That's how I like to think of our suzani jackets- flowers, but make them interesting, artsy, and confident. |
I love visiting contemporary art museums, and one thing that many of them have is a piece by Mark Rothko. I'll always spend a few moments in front of his paintings, absorbing the colour, and experiencing its true nature. An eternal love of color blocking is one way that my love of Rothko stands out, especially well seen on our sweaters. |
I'm an 80's child, and although I was too young to read the first issues of Dazed and Confused, I do feel like thst graphic aesthetic was all around me, and very influential. This 80's graphic aesthetic is fearless, eclectic, stylized, ironic, never too ernest, and always with a huge dose of music and movement. |
