I believe social impact is finding a social issue that you are passionate about, identifying solutions, and being an advocate for the solutions to that issue.
Zakiya recalls a life changing experience from high school, “...I had the opportunity to be an intern with a small environmental organization in my hometown. This opportunity allowed me to not only see the impact our drain waste had on our beloved Commencement Bay, but also allowed me to share our impact and educate my community on alternative options.
It started with stenciling the storm drains and then empowering the community on why we were stenciling. It was powerful!” This experience led her to a career in education as well as opening a sustainable fashion business – The Chayah Movement.
