It's My Birthday!

It's My Birthday!

Okay, I know — most people don't love talking about their age. But honestly? I love getting older, and the older I get the more I want to shout about it, and celebrate being alive. I genuinely feel like my life didn't really start until I hit 40. And it has just kept getting better from there.

As much as I'd love to share everything I've learned across 47 years, that would be a very long email. So instead — a few things I've picked up about getting dressed.

I wear denim almost daily, but I love how chic our upcycled denim is - the jackets over black dresses, heels with the culottes and shorts. It's an easy way to dress something down a notch whilst still looking really put together.

Where what actually suits you - on repeat.

If there's a neckline that looks better on you than others. A sweater length. Colours that get you more compliments than others. Figure those out, and then just...wear them. I recently had a colour analysis done (our whole team did it together - so much fun) and since learning I look best in deep, dark hues, I've leaned all the way in. If I want white, I layer a darker jacket over it. When you wear things you know suit you, your confidence goes up and your wardrobe decisions get easier.

If you follow our emails, you'll know the Shira arrived a little late this Spring - but honestly, I've been wearing it nearly every day. New York Springtime is slowly emerging, and the mornings and evenings are still deliciously cool, which means it's basically perfect right now. Do with that what you will.

All black + one great piece = always works

When in doubt, wear all black and throw a colourful jacket over it. (Preferably a Namai jacket, obviously) Done. Effortless. Every time.

I saw this jacket and it was love at first sight. Plus, this fuschia pink is one of the most universally flattering colours out there. Did I mention that the reverse side is teal and white Ikat?!

Even though I live in Kingston full- time now, I'm still a New Yorker at heart, and any jacket with black immediately has my attention. I love how graphic this piece is, and the green ombre is so unusual, I love it.

Develop your style - but keep one eye on the kids.

Commit to your own aesthetic, absolutely. But from time to time, check out what's happening in fashion right now. Not to chase trends that are a generation away from you — just to pick up on what's in the air. It keeps your style feeling timeless rather than rigidly stuck in a particular era, and you might discover a proportion or silhouette you'd never have tried otherwise. Instagram and Pinterest are your friends here.

This jacket feels like pure modern Spring- and I can tell you, the reverse side is equally beautiful, it was hard to pick a side. The colour combinations are amazing and I love the stripey binding.

The sock era is upon us.

I'm a diehard barefoot sneaker wearer. Or I was — until Gen Z showed me the light. I can't unsee it now. Colourful socks have become one of my favourite ways to add a pop of something unexpected to an outfit. A small change, genuinely transformative.

I don't talk about the Ishani enough, it's actually one of my favorite styles. Its a really oversized fit, and there are no buttons, its flowy and loungey, perfect for indoor/outdoor hangs. This particular piece was block printed with a stripe design, and I love how clean and simple it is.

I used to be a shoe designer...

...so I can't write a getting dressed email without mentioning shoes. The right shoe can completely change the proportions of an outfit — and dress it up or down in a way nothing else really can. I'll wear the exact same outfit and swap a high boot for a sneaker, and it's basically a different look entirely. Pay attention to your shoes. They're doing more work than you think.
