Knitting With Recycled Silk Saris | The making of the Vishnu Sweater

Knitting With Recycled Silk Saris | The making of the Vishnu Sweater

Statement sweaters are a key wardrobe items, and it's been a goal of ours to design sweaters for a long time. It was important for us to continue with the ethos behind the kantha quilted jackets, by finding a way to do the knits using recycled textiles.

It was also important to the design concept to find the right material that would contribute to the look and feel of the piece. The solution to this arose organically. One day, I spotted a knitted rug behind my Tailor in his workshop while we were talking on WhatsApp. The rug was made from knitted saris! Although he wasn't able to reduce the idea, it ignited a drive to find someone who could knit using recycled fabrics to create The Vishnu Recycled Silk Collar Sweaters.

Where did the inspiration come from?

The starting point was art. Colours, textures and forms were deeply inspired by favorite artists Meera Mukherjee, Nick Cave, Ruth Asawa, Georgia O' Keefe and Chris Ofili.

How are they made?

The sweaters are made from discarded or unused saris, which are traditional garments worn by women in South Asia. Each sweater is made from six recycled silk sarees. The Sarees are first selected for their colours and prints, and in some cases they'll be dyed so that the tones are right.

Once the six sarees are finalized, the next step is to cut into strips of equal width and roll them into balls so they’re to be knitted.

The silk is then transported to remote villages, where women knit from home. The strips are woven together using a traditional loom or a handloom. The weaver carefully selects the colors and patterns to create a unique and visually stunning piece of fabric.

Each sweater is a work of art, with vibrant colors and intricate patterns that reflect the rich cultural heritage of the region.

How does it contribute to sustainability?

By choosing a recycled sari knit sweater, you are actively participating in the sustainable fashion movement. Here's how:

  1. Reduces textile waste: The fashion industry is notorious for its high levels of textile waste. By repurposing saris that would otherwise end up in landfills, these sweaters help reduce the environmental impact of the fashion industry.

2. Saves water and energy: Producing new textiles requires significant amounts of water and energy. By using recycled materials, the production process is much more resource-efficient, helping to conserve these valuable resources.

3. Supports ethical practices: Many recycled sari knit sweaters are made by artisans in developing countries, providing them with fair wages and safe working conditions. By purchasing these sweaters, you are supporting ethical practices and empowering these artisans.

Namai’s Vishnu Recycled Silk Collar Sweaters are not only a fashion statement but also a sustainable and ethical choice. By choosing one of these unique sweaters, you are contributing to a more environmentally friendly fashion industry and supporting artisans in developing countries.
