Ralli Quilts | The tradition behind The Sakshi Ralli Quilted Shoulder Bag

Ralli Quilts | The tradition behind The Sakshi Ralli Quilted Shoulder Bag

Ralli Quilting is a traditional form of textile art that originated in India and Pakistan. It is known for its vibrant colors, intricate patterns, and rich cultural heritage. Come explore the tradition behind the quilts that The Sakshi Ralli Quilted Shoulder Bag are made from.

It is not just a form of artistic expression but also a means of communication. Each design and pattern used in this technique carries a symbolic meaning, representing the traditions, beliefs, and stories of the community it belongs to. Examining the quilt closer can give clues to the life of the woman who made it. It reveals the traditions passed down to her, her own creativity and love for the craft.

How is the Quilt made?

First, to get enough fabric for a Ralli, the women of the household collect old clothing as it is worn out. The cloth is washed and saved, some pieces are held for many years waiting for the “right” quilt. These pieces are then stitched together to create a larger design. The quilt is made of an upper and lower cloth layer (purr) and filling (laih) which are traditionally designed and constructed by just one woman.

Once these three pieces have been prepared, the woman invites other women from neighboring houses for the “rally-vijhanu” or the laying of the Ralli. The lower purr is spread onto a mat of date palm leaves, then the filling pieces are spread over the cloth and tacked down. The upper purr is placed on top. The women sit on different corners and stitch in straight lines to secure the pieces together. Once this is complete the woman will complete the rest of the quilt herself.

There are three widely known categories of Rallis. The quilts used to make our Sakshi Shoulder bags are called Toukri or “patchwork”. These patchwork quilts are made of small pieces of fabric either torn or cut into geometric shapes, particularly squares or triangles. Many of the traditional patchwork designs are inspired by the ancient pottery of the region.

Ralli Quilting is an art form steeped in tradition and love. Each quilt carries with it the rich history of the pieces of cloth that make it a whole and the lives of the women that hand selected them and pieced them together. These quilts are truly a labor of love and celebration of culture and we are so thrilled to carry on this tradition by sharing them with you.
